This Morning…

February 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

On most Sunday mornings the Children’s Ministry runs like clockwork. Every volunteer shows up, no staff are away, the babies are quiet, and the children learn about the things of the Lord.

But then there are some mornings like this morning. Probably unknown to almost everyone in the building, our children’s ministry team quietly handled the stress of too few teachers and workers for the numbers of children who would be there. And, once again, we watched as God brought the relief needed. Whether it is someone just “coming by” to see if help is needed, or just an “in-the-moment” idea that brings resolution, we regularly see God watch over our children bringing safety, security and great teaching even on weeks when the best staffing plan falls apart due to illness, emergencies and all sort of challenges. We are so blessed to have a staff team with a great dependence on God, and the flexibility to respond well.

By the way, there is an ongoing opportunity for serving in Children’s Ministries. Please consider contacting Charla at cmills@cbccross.net about opportunities, training, and the blessing of touching lives. And, let the children’s staff know how much you appreciate their commitment.

Expository Preaching

February 5, 2009 · 1 Comment

Most of our congregation is aware that Jerry Mitchell was away last Sunday. He was in Southern California joining in a celebration for Dr. John MacArthur who has completed 40 years as Pastor of Grace Community Church. John was, and is, a significant mentor for several of our staff, and Jerry in particular.

One of the legacies of that mentorship has been a commitment to ongoing, regular, verse-by-verse sermons at Crossroads Bible Church. This is one of the non-negotiable distinctives of our church such that, even when Pastor Mitchell is away, our staff engages in the same expositional method as they fill the pulpit.

To get some insight in to Jerry’s commitment to expositional preaching you might find this chapter by John MacAthur to be of interest. You can read a summary of his points on the Unashamed Workman blog.

By the way, Jerry Mitchell has been Pastor of CBC since 1980 … a legacy of his own.
